3 Security Tips for Running Legacy Applications in Modern IT Environments

Running Legacy Applications in Modern IT Environments with Outdated Technologies is Putting You At Risk

Despite the rapid pace of digital transformation, many enterprises still rely on legacy applications to perform critical business functions. However, running these applications in modern IT environments comes with inherent security risks due to outdated runtimes, unsupported operating systems, and known vulnerabilities that remain unpatched. Rather than continuing to expose your organization to unnecessary risk, containerize your applications for a secure and more manageable future.

Here are three security-focused tips for running legacy applications in modern IT environments in a secure, compliant, and high-performing manner by containerizing them with solutions like Numecent’s Cloudpaging containers.

1. Containerize Dated Runtimes and Middleware to Limit Exposure

Legacy applications often depend on outdated runtimes or middleware, such as old versions of Java Runtimes or Visual C++ Redistributables. These components are no longer maintained and frequently become the weakest link in your security posture.

What to do:

  • Conduct a dependency audit to identify which applications rely on outdated runtimes.
  • Engage with application owners to plan a migration path to newer versions of applications that do not require dated runtime versions.
  • In the interim, containerize both the application and its dependent runtime using Cloudpaging.
  • Deploy the runtime application in Layer 4 mode to fully virtualize and isolate the runtime, limiting system access.
  • Assign the container only to employees who require it, minimizing your organization’s exposure.

By containerizing the legacy runtime, you decouple it from the host system, prevent system-wide installation, and retain control over access—buying time while waiting for newer versions to be delivered.

2. Eliminate the Need for Legacy Operating Systems

In some cases, legacy applications may require outdated operating systems like Windows XP or 32-bit environments like Windows 10 32-bit which will soon near end of support just to function properly, posing a major risk to your organization.

What to do:

  • Inventory systems still running legacy operating systems and the applications they support.
  • Use Cloudpaging to containerize these applications and deliver them directly to modern Windows OS environments.
  • Retire outdated systems without sacrificing access to essential applications.

This approach allows you to modernize your desktop estate while maintaining business continuity, closing one of the biggest security gaps in legacy IT operations.

3. Move Beyond Outdated Packaging Formats

Legacy formats like MSI and App-V are no longer under active development and offer limited isolation or control capabilities, making them a poor fit for today’s security landscape.

What to do:

  • Start transitioning applications from MSI, App-V, or other legacy formats to Cloudpaging application containers.
  • Leverage Numecent’s non-interactive packager or Cloudpager to automate the conversion process.
  • Benefit from enhanced control, isolation, and compatibility that legacy formats simply can’t provide.

Cloudpaging containers are optimized for secure, dynamic delivery, even for complex or stubborn legacy applications, providing a long-term, modern replacement for outdated packaging methods.

Conclusion: Granular Control, Secure Delivery, and Peace of Mind

Cloudpaging containers offer fine-grained control over how applications are isolated or integrated with the local systems. You can deploy applications per-user, even on shared devices, with visibility restricted to only those assigned—a vital capability for securing sensitive or vulnerable legacy software.

Additionally, every Cloudpaging container is encrypted per-machine, preventing unauthorized redistribution or tampering. Compatibility modes can be set on a per-application basis, ensuring certain legacy applications behave as expected on modern operating systems whilst not introducing system wide resource constraints.

Advanced security features, like Digital Rights Management (DRM) controls, preventing copying in or out of the container sandbox – ensure the integrity of application containers and the underlying systems, respectively. The ability to quickly dynamically deploying application update in Cloudpaging application containers allows IT teams to implement urgent fixes and deliver them across the enterprise in moments providing further peace of mind.

In short, modernizing how you run legacy applications through Cloudpaging and Cloudpager doesn’t just extend their life, it strengthens your security posture without sacrificing usability.
